Coronation Street, like all soaps, is well known for its tragic deaths and shocking stunts, which often rip apart the hearts of the nation as our favourite characters are taken away from us.

As a viewer, I do love watching an epic stunt, the iconic tram crash or the Victoria Court fire springing to mind. However, these stunts often lead to tragic endings - leaving viewers and residents of the Street in turmoil.

In this article, I will consider my top 5 favourite female characters who took met their demise too soon!

Tina McIntyre

Tina McIntyre, portrayed by Michelle Keegan, a Rovers Return barmaid who was brutally murdered by Rob Donovan back in 2014.

Despite embarking on an affair with Peter Barlow, which in my personal opinion ruined her character arc, Tina did not deserve a murder. The episodes were executed wonderfully, during Corrie's iconic BGT week.

Tina's death scenes will always be in my memory, as we lost an iconic character and a wonderful actress.

However, since leaving Corrie, Michelle Keegan's career has rightfully flourished — from Our Girl, Brassic and Netflix's Fool Me Once. Whilst it was devastating to lose Tina McIntyre, it has been lovely to watch Michelle's career develop beyond the Street.

Kylie Platt

Kylie Platt was by far one of my favourite Coronation Street characters.

In 2016, Kylie was stabbed in the chest by Clayton, a scene which I will never forget. The image of Kylie laying lifelessly in David's arms is something I will always remember, as Kylie died just as the ambulance arrived.

The harrowing scenes are unforgettable and devastating, impacting viewers and the Platt family. Whilst these scenes were acted incredibly, I wish Kylie Platt was still alive on our screens!

Actress Paula Lane who portrays Kylie is currently in another ITV soap, Emmerdale, playing Ella Foster.

Natasha Blakeman

Natasha Blakeman had a son, Sam, with Nick and returned to the cobbles in 2021 with him in tow.

Nick was initially hesitant about forming a bond with Sam, but quickly the pair were happy to share a father-son relationship.

Natasha was shot by drug lord Harvey Gaskell, and Natasha tragically passed away. The relationship of mother and son between Natasha and Sam was absolutely beautiful, and it was heart-wrenching to see it taken from us viewers too soon!

Rachel Leskovac who portrayed Natasha has done an incredible job in BBC drama Waterloo Road — but I would have loved her time in Corrie to be a little longer.

Rana Habeeb

Rana was by far one of my favourite Corrie characters. Rana's relationship with Kate was perfect, as a lesbian myself it was lovely to see this relationship portrayed on screen.

Rana's experience with homophobia in the Muslim community was portrayed effectively, giving Muslim women who experience homophobia a voice.

However, Rana tragically took her demise in the 2019 Underworld roof collapse stunt, on her wedding day to Kate! It would have been lovely to see the pair make it down the aisle, particularly for LGBTQIA+ viewers.

Rana's death was cold and cruel, and she is very much missed on the street, as is Bhavna Limbachia who portrayed Rana.

Maddie Heath

Maddie Heath, introduced in 2013 to the Street, quickly befriended Sophie Webster, leading to a relationship between the pair.

Sophie and Maddie were perfect for one another, with viewers rooting for their happiness. However, the 2015 Victoria Court fire stunt swiped Maddie away, leaving Sophie utterly heartbroken.

Maddie, just 18 years old, tragically died and viewers were left devastated that Sophie and Maddie had been ripped apart. It would have been lovely to see Sophie and Maddie's relationship develop and blossom.

Amy-James Kelly who portrayed Maddie is fantastic, we have seen her step into many acting roles, such as Harlan Coben's Safe on Netflix. Whilst I am still not over Maddie's demise, it is lovely to see Amy shine in some incredible acting roles.

Overall, it is clear there have been many strong female characters who have died an intimately death on the cobbles.

Whilst character deaths are inevitable in soap, it is still utterly heartbreaking. Which character would you like to see return from the dead? Let us know!
